About Andy

I am an avid adventurer, conservationist, teacher, and outdoor photographer whose photography celebrates the African landscape and its rich wildlife, people, and culture. My photographic safaris allow my travelers to not only enhance their understanding of photography, lighting, and wildlife, but to develop a life-long admiration for Africa ‘s beauty and culture.

Banana Republic recently used my photographs as the cornerstone of their Urban Safari campaign, and my images were seen in all 750 stores around the globe, as well as in their billboards, catalogs and annual report. I was also the winner of the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year in the ‘Wild Places’ category in 2008 and a highly commended in the ‘Creative Visions of Nature’ category in 2007.

I launched Gura Gear in 2008, in an attempt to deliver lightweight camera bags to the market. I was looking for a lightweight camera bag to hold all of my photographic gear, and there was nothing desirable on the market that suited my needs. After spending 2 years with many prototypes, the Gura Gear Kiboko bag was born. More products are now available on the Gura Gear web site.

Safari Testimonial

I really appreciate everything you did to make our Botswana safari a success. It exceeded my expectations in every way. The organization was very well done and I could not be happier with the landscapes and animals we saw, and the help you, Grant and our guides gave us to achieve the objective of coming back with some amazing photos. Our following the elephant in the water from the boat was an amazing experience that I’ll never forget. Having a great group of fellow travelers was a bonus and added another layer to the experience, especially with those who were in my vehicle each day.

Testimonial from Terrence Clifford

Karen and I love Africa and this is our fourth safari with Andy Biggs. There is a very important reason for our choice of safaris. If you ever get to watch the behind the scenes of a National Geographic production, you soon realize it takes a team of dedicated individuals to get those shots that are oh so good. This team is responsible for getting the photographer and his gear to the ideal location at the right time of day/night. You might think that this is an easy task but it takes extensive preparation and planning to make it seamless to the photographer whose only concern is to get the shots. This is what Andy Biggs and his team of passionate dedicated individuals do that sets them apart from the rest. Highly recommended.

Testimonial from Stephen Starkman

Stephen joined me in Iceland recently, and this is what he wrote to me:

Andy, what a terrific (and productive!) tour we had in Iceland with yourself, Josh Holko and Daniel Bergmann this March. I think we experienced every kind of weather (well, nothing a palm tree would feel comfortable in) shot in amazing locations and saw incredibly beautiful scenery. For me, shooting the northern lights was particularly memorable - a first in my photographic career. The tour was a great success! As before, when I travelled with you to Namibia, I was particularly impressed by your enthusiasm and dedication to each member, helping them achieve the best images they can. I for one am particularly pleased with some of the images I came away with, thank you once again!

Here are some absolutely superb photos from Stephen from our Iceland trip:

Safari Testimonial: Lou and Terry Buonomo

Dear Andy-

Well, we have sadly come to terms with the fact that the trip has come and gone. We are still pouring through hundreds of images and trying to complete a trip journal so as not to forget any of the fantastic experiences we had.

We had such a wonderful time on the safari. Part of it was certainly the wonder of Botswana and our first experience in Africa and on a safari. But a huge part of it was the expertise with which the trip was planned, down to the very finest details. Your expertise combined with that of James and Grant ensured not only an amazing experience “in country” but also enabled us to return with so many wonderful images! The trip was designed to provide maximum photographic opportunities and it delivered on its promise. There was a constant supply of not-to-be-missed chances to capture a special image.

Reflecting on the experience as a whole, it is pretty amazing to take a group of thirteen people, all strangers (well except for the couples!), fly them around in little planes to dirt airstrips, immerse them in a place with no contact with the outside world, ride them around for hours at a time in open vehicles over what can barely be called roads, and have them love it…yeah, pretty amazing.

Seriously, all the planning that goes into these trips is clearly reflected in the superb level of the accommodations, the delicious meals, the transportation (between and in the camps), the camp staff; all of it. Everything was top-notch and no detail was overlooked.

We so enjoyed the trip that the “once-in-a-lifetime” tag line can no longer be used.  It is true that once you go to Africa, you feel you must return.

Lou & Terry

Safari Testimonial - Rajesh Khanna

Andy-

My trip to Botswana with you was simply fantastic and beyond expectations. I had booked the trip a year in advance and was looking forward to it with a lot of excitement. As a result, it took quite some doing to achieve an outcome beyond my expectations. This was certainly one of the best vacations in my life in one of the best places in the world. Andy, I think of your role in 2 parts: (i) thorough preparations in arranging the best guides, accommodations and logistics, and (ii) more importantly, coach, friend & guide to help us take better photographs. On the first part, the arrangements were flawless. The guides at each camp were outstanding & extremely knowledgeable - unlike regular guides, they understood the needs of photographers and the appropriate positioning of their vehicles to enable all passengers get a good angle for their photos and to position us well in terms of the angle of the available light. The camps were also well selected with abundant wildlife, high quality accommodations and highly courteous/ friendly staff. Many thanks to James & Nicky at Eyes on Africa for taking such good care of the arrangements.

Andy, you were fabulous - great knowledge of African wildlife, highly passionate about photography, always willing to go the extra mile, always helpful (even when you were sleepy!), genuinely keen to teach/ share your knowledge and keen to ensure that all participants have a great experience. I must have asked you hundreds of questions & you answered all of them with a smile. You are a warm and great guy to spend 2 weeks with! Equally importantly, you were also sensitive to our special needs - such as ensuring that I was comfortable on game drives since I have a bad back. I also observed that while you were keen to take wildlife photos, you put the needs of the group above your own. For example, you did not hog the best seats or determine where we would drive solely based on your own personal desires. I took hundreds of great photos during the trip and have shared them with many envious friends.

I definitely will go on more photo safari trips with you and am tentatively planning a trip to Botswana in 2011!

Thanks again.
Rajesh

Lightroom and the Digital Fine Art Print workshop testimonials

Here are a few testimonials from some of our recent workshop participants:

"..Hello Andy, Michael, and everyone else,
I can't help but smile every time I think of the wonderful experience garnered from our workshop. Between what I learned from the two of you, as well as from my talented classmates - this was a great experience, and I would do it again. In fact I'm trying to figure out a way to do Moab and Africa.
"

-----------

"..Andy, thank you and Michael for a wonderful, educational, experienced based workshop in Santa Fe. Today I reread my notes from the classroom work and have been amazed at how deeply informative it was. Michael's Lightroom Book as well as yours about digital printing have given me a whole new level of understanding especially around the Lightroom Develop module as well as on the entire topic of printing and color management. I really appreciate how you and Michael showed your individual processes for image workflow. Comparing and contrasting both methods allowed me to take the best of both and adapt them to fit my needs. My increase in knowledge along with the additional hands on guidance we got in the three photo sessions for aspen fall colors, Albuquerque Balloon Festival, and Abiquiu landscape site, will enable me going forward to make the best photos I'm capable of producing. Showing the class the image evaluation image printed on many different papers was most informative as was printing a few of our individual "best" photos from the week.

Andy, I've taken several photography seminars over the past few years. Without a doubt your's has been the most informative, well organized, openly sharing event I've attended.

Thanks again for all your help and guidance. It's clear you don't hold back when teaching and sincerely want all attendees to get as much out of the seminars as we're able to absorb.

-----------

"..Your workshop at Santa Fe was too good and I came away with a lot of knowledge and renewed energy. The level of expertise that you and Michael shared was topnotch and I hope to repeat this experience again. Thanks for such a great workshop."

Safari Testimonial: Jeff Schweiger

"..I wanted to thank you for a wonderful photo workshop in Botswana. I have participated in several of your workshops over the last couple of years, but this trip was, by far, the best photo workshop that I have been on. Every aspect of this trip was first rate, and well planned. The preparation and planning by you allow our group to concentrate only on photography. The four camps that we stayed at were all wonderful, and the guides were fantastic, and contributed to this being a once in “once in a lifetime” trip, and I will remember fondly for the rest of my life.

In addition, I also wanted to thank you for the help and advise that you provided between game drives with the processing of my images. With your help, I was able to improve my images, and learn a great deal on how to post process my pictures. Your knowledge and experience with wildlife photography really help me in both in understanding what shots worked and what didn't and helped me to improve my photography in the field.

I look forward to our next trip together!"

Workshop Testimonial: Stephen Starkman

Stephen Starkman recently traveled with me and John Paul Caponigro to Namibia, Africa. Stephen was kind of enough to share his exceptional photographs with me, as well as his testimonial. Thanks so much, Stephen!

As a side note, John Paul will be returning to Namibia next year in September 2010 to lead another Namibia landscape workshop. I will be formally announcing the workshop in the coming days, however I have already posted the itinerary online:

Namibia Photographic Workshop with John Paul Caponigro

September 20-30, 2010

"..Andy, I cannot thank you enough for all his hard work putting together our workshop in south and central Namibia. You are a man of exceptional talent and infinite patience (well, almost infinite!). You are also an incredibly talented photographer, as is evident in the pages on your website. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute taking another workshop with Andy. Andy - we all had a blast - and now some exceptional photographs to show for it!"
