About Andy

I am an avid adventurer, conservationist, teacher, and outdoor photographer whose photography celebrates the African landscape and its rich wildlife, people, and culture. My photographic safaris allow my travelers to not only enhance their understanding of photography, lighting, and wildlife, but to develop a life-long admiration for Africa ‘s beauty and culture.

Banana Republic recently used my photographs as the cornerstone of their Urban Safari campaign, and my images were seen in all 750 stores around the globe, as well as in their billboards, catalogs and annual report. I was also the winner of the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year in the ‘Wild Places’ category in 2008 and a highly commended in the ‘Creative Visions of Nature’ category in 2007.

I launched Gura Gear in 2008, in an attempt to deliver lightweight camera bags to the market. I was looking for a lightweight camera bag to hold all of my photographic gear, and there was nothing desirable on the market that suited my needs. After spending 2 years with many prototypes, the Gura Gear Kiboko bag was born. More products are now available on the Gura Gear web site.

America 24/7 Book Project

I have been published in the America 24/7 - Texas edition book project (The real name is actually Texas 24/7). Most likely the smallest published image on the planet, but it was a fun project to be a part of. Andy photographed for only an hour or so in Luckenbach, Texas, made famous in Waylon Jennings' Luckenbach, Texas song in the 1970's.

I have returned from Africa

We have recently returned from our latest photographic safari trip to Tanzania. We spent two weeks with some breathtaking wildlife, culture and landscapes, set to the backdrop of the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. We had a great group of travelers with us, who came along to share in our enjoyment of what east Africa has to offer, and to learn how to capture these experiences from a photographic point of view. We had varying types of accommodations, from luxury lodges, to luxury tented camps, to semi permanent tented camps, and all were unique experiences.

I have thrown together just a few sample photographs to illustrate what we saw and what our activities were. The quality of light on the Serengeti plains is quite unique, and makes for some wonderful photography. We look forward to spending more time in Africa in 2005, as we already have our February 2005 trip sold out, as well as our July 2005 trip is well under way towards a full sell out.
